Happy New Year! We hope your start to 2015 has been a great one.
January 27 is Family Literacy Day across the country and here in Quesnel we are celebrating this event a day early. Join us on January 26 at the West Park Mall from 3pm - 5pm for a host of free family literacy activities. Call 778.414.9119 if you want more information. See you on the 26th. Hello again!
The start to the year was a little slow. With my 3 kids at home (no school to go to), I found myself switching between home schooling and trying to get a start on my literacy work. As you probably know, literacy 'work' never really ends. We are surrounded by experiences that require literacy skills - such as this writing this post - and if our skills aren't sharp in that particular area, the sense of incompetence or even defeat sets in pretty quickly. This year I would really like to share thoughts on literacy and have readers share them with me. We are now back to our routine with school in session and the literacy office open and I look forward to working on new initiatives and dusting off old favourites (such as Story Time). At Literacy Quesnel, we make it our business to reach out to all sectors of the community. We want to help enhance literacy skills and increase awareness. If you have ideas of who we might work with or what activities we might offer to increase the level of understanding and accessibility to information, please contact us. Our phone number is 778.414.9119 and our email address is [email protected]. Till next time, happy learning! Rebecca We would like to invite everyone to our AGM (Annual General Meeting) on Tuesday June 10 at 5pm.
It is important to us that we have input from as many people in the community as possible. We would love to see you here. Join us on June 10 for appetizers. Room 206, 488 McLean Street, Quesnel. Call 778 414 9119 for any details... Thanks to Mayor Mary Sjostrom for presenting Literacy Quesnel Society with a certificate of recognition at our celebration last week. From left to right here is Vicki Esplen - our President, Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom, coordinator Rebecca Beuschel, our Vice President Sandy Meidlinger and our Director Bev Barr accepting the certificate. Thanks to the Quesnel Tillicum Society for hosting our event! Happy Family Literacy Day to you!
We are celebrating family literacy day on Wednesday January 29th. Please join us anytime from 3-6pm as we celebrate Family Literacy at the Quesnel Tillicum Society. Come to 319 North Fraser Drive and celebrate with us. There will be games, door prizes, stories, refreshments, activities for everyone and lots of information. If you would like more information on literacy in our community please call us at 778 414 9119 or email [email protected] See you on Wednesday. Welcome to the new year! We hope it brought you many smiles and good books!
We have increased the amount of Bright Red Bookshelves we have in the community. These bookshelves are stocked with gently used books for you (or anyone else) to take, borrow, exchange or just read while you're waiting! The bookshelves are located at the Rec Centre, the Twin Arenas, both Laundromats, Child Care Resource and Referral (together with Axis), MCFD, NCAFPS (Long Name) and the Child Development Centre. If you have any gently used books you would like to donate, you can bring them to the office where we can clean them up, put a sticker on them and stack them onto one of the shelves. We are open Monday - Thursday but if we are not here, you can always just leave them outside our door - they will be safe there until we can collect them and use them. call or email us if you have any questions (778 414 9119 or [email protected]) Thanks for your help! Rebecca November is Financial Literacy month, so to celebrate this theme we are hosting 2 different workshops to help you understand your financial stuff better!
On Monday November 18th from 7 pm-8.30 pm and again on Tuesday November 19th from noon - 1.30 pm we will bring you "Raise Money Smart Kids". This 90 minute session will help you learn all sorts of ways to raise kids who know how to handle their money. Choose the best time for you - evening or noon. This is a free session but you need to register so we know how many people to expect. Call us at 778 414 9119. The second workshop is on Thursday November 28th from 6.30 - 8.30 pm. Come and learn about "Avoiding the spending traps at Christmas". This workshop is also free but you need to register. Come and learn how to avoid those traps that get you further into debt - especially at Christmas time, but the information is useful for any time of the year. Call 778 414 9119 to register your place for one of both of these workshops. Thanks to everyone who participated in the story time at the library on Tuesday. We had so much fun with our great story teller Vicki. It was lovely to hear the children re-telling their own spider stories.
This Saturday - October 26 - is the day of the Child Development Centre Variety Show. Make sure you stop in to enjoy some entertainment and buy some tickets to win one of 15 great gift baskets. There are also guess the weight of the pumpkin competitions! Literacy Quesnel is providing some books for anyone who stops in at the Variety Show. I think it starts at 11am and goes until 3pm. We are hosting a story time event - just in time to get ready for Halloween! Join us at the Quesnel Library on Tuesday October 22 at 3pm. This is geared towards children from 4 -10 years old but all ages are welcome. Kids and adults can enjoy a snack and learn a halloween story then learn to re-create the story to share with others. This event is free. Let us know you can come by calling 778 414 9119. See you there!
